Week 6

Body Size

Welcome to the 6th week of your pregnancy! What a rush you are sure to be feeling right now. Even though this is only week 6, changes are already happening and loads of them.

You are probably not seeing much physical changes in your belly yet. Possibly, you may be feeling some tenderness when touching your belly. Your breasts are probably more tender than usual, too. They may have started to feel a little larger than normal already.

Some women say around the 6th week, they get headaches, notice an increase in smell sensations, and more mood swings than normal occur. Overall, week six means the start of being sensitive to everything in your body and out of it. Smells that normally were pleasing may just make you nauseous. Keep in mind, these feelings and sensations are temporary and will only last usually through the first trimester. You are already through your first half of the first trimester, if you can believe that.

The 6th week starts the cravings and any nausea. As a result, your body may change. Watch the cravings so you do not start gaining excess weight. Also, keep an eye on the nausea; you do not want to lose too much weight either.

Baby Size

The baby is growing rapidly. The baby is now about 1/4" long and is less than an ounce in weight.

Your baby has developed spots this week. He has spots that mark his ears and eyes. He has little stubs growing for arms and legs. He also is starting to develop his lungs. His heartbeat is now faintly audible, so you might just get to hear it this visit.

Compare Size

There haven't been too many drastic changes in size since last week. You can now compare the size of your baby to a lentil during week 6. You can also expect the baby to grow a lot more in the weeks to come.

Your first visit is going to be the most hands on and extensive of them all. You can expect a full exam, urinalysis and blood workup. Make sure you bring your list of questions to this appointment.
