How to Find Hubby Time

A baby normally brings a great deal of joy to a household. However, if there is one thing that couples lose out on when they have a baby, it's quality time together without interruptions.

The Demands of the Baby

Having a baby in one's house is demanding and draining. There is feeding and diaper changing to do on a regular basis, for instance, which can preoccupy the parents. It is also true that babies never sleep through the night at first, so it is very hard to get a good night's sleep. According to Francesca Di Meglio of About.com, it's a good idea to expect your sleeping patterns to be completely upside-down for a while. All of these factors can lead to two exhausted parents who barely have the time or energy for any kind of intimacy.

It is important to nurture your relationship as much as possible. When you have a new baby, sometimes the day-to-day needs of your baby's existence can completely take over if you don't find hubby time.

Plan Ahead

Ideally, before you plan on having children, you and your partner should talk about how you will keep your relationship thriving even after the baby arrives. Make sure you know what your partner's needs are, and communicate your own. You should go into parenthood knowing that you will be exhausted and irritable, at least at first, so you will not have unrealistic expectations. It is a good idea to identify who you else you have in your lives to watch and care for the baby should you want some private time together. Make a list of trusted individuals who you can count on in this scenario, such as grandparents, brothers, sisters, or other family members, and include neighbors and friends as well. That way you will not feel like you can never get away. Even during pregnancy, however, it is useful to make this list.

Ways to Maintain Closeness with Your Partner

There are many ways to connect even after having a baby. According to Alandra Johnson at bendbulletin.com, making time to eat lunch with your partner once a week or scheduling regular date nights can help your relationship. You may be able to hire someone to help you keep the house up, as well, such as cleaning, doing laundry, or mowing the lawn, which will aid you in conserving energy and time, some of which you can spend on your spouse. If you are feeling like you never have time for physical intimacy, plan to get up a little earlier than the baby does, so that you can enjoy being together before the baby begins crying.
