Mom's Daily Schedule

Congratulations on the birth of your beautiful child! Now that you've made the choice to be a stay at home mom, it's important to set a schedule. This schedule will help you achieve your household and mother goals each day, and will help your mentality as you adjust to your new lifestyle! Here are some things that you need to know about making a stay at home mom daily schedule.

Different Time, Different Moms!

Today's stay at home moms are a different type of woman than the stay at home moms of generations past. Often, women are entering motherhood from years of being in the work force. Leaving the structure of an office may leave some new stay at home moms feeling frustrated and easily distracted. They may wonder, "where has the day gone?" when it's suddenly evening time and they have not accomplished everything they needed to in the day. Also, these women may now go from meeting expectations set forth by a boss to managing the household jointly with their husband or partner. This shift in relationship accountability can be difficult to get used to.

Keep in Mind

Setting a stay at home mom daily schedule is that things will always change and unexpected situations will always arise! Using your schedule as a tool to help navigate what you'd like to achieve and accomplish is the best way to approach setting the schedule. Striking a balance between flexibility and personal accountability is the goal.

To create a stay at home mom daily schedule, follow these steps:

  1. Examine your personal work ethic. Think about schedules you've adhered to best in the past. Were they written down or saved on your laptop? Were they simple Word documents or detailed Excel spreadsheets? Did a special appointment book help keep your days straight? Once you determine the best method for maintaining a schedule, you can then begin to plot one out.
  2. Think about a week at a glance. Most stay at home moms have a similar set of chores and tasks they need to complete to keep the household running effectively. Some of these chores include grocery shopping, cleaning, running various errands, and taking care of the needs of the new baby and any pets or other children in the home. By jotting down a list of chores and tasks that come to mind first, a stay at home mom can then populate her schedule from that list.
  3. Set certain days for certain chores. Do the sales at your local market start on Tuesdays? Then Tuesday morning is probably a great time for a trip to the grocery store. It might be a great idea to pick up dry cleaning on Friday afternoons, so the garments are ready for the next week. It's hard to clean while tending to a baby, so perhaps when the baby naps is the best time for doing the dishes and laundry. Once these times are determined, the mom can start blocking out segments of her schedule.
  4. Finally, remember to allot some time each day for downtime. Downtime can include playing with the children, or taking a few minutes to have coffee on the patio. Although it's tempting to fill in the schedule with necessary chores all day, it's not worth it. Take time for yourself to relax and rejuvenate when you can. It will lead to a happier and healthier mom throughout the course of the week!
