Your Skin and Being Pregnant

Your Skin During Pregnancy

Throughout your pregnancy-your body will endure a certain number of changes; mostly due to radical hormonal shifts. One of these changes might be reflected in your skin. From conception to birth, hormones can wreak havoc on the skin. So what are some of the skin changes you can expect to experience?
  • Both the skin covering your breasts and abdomen will expand dramatically-and then should (as long as you are eating right and exercising appropriately during your pregnancy) return to its original size...more or less.
  • Itchy skin during pregnancy could be Papular Dematitis-this consists of very itchy, tiny bumps that can appear almost anywhere on your skin.
  • Melasma and Chloasma-Melasma and Chloasma are both conditions in which pigmentation of the cheeks on the face darken into tan or brown patches. Melasma and Chloasma tend to occur in half of all women during pregnancy.
  • Stretch marks-Although they show up on the skin’s surface, they are not superficial scars. They are deep-rooted scars that are the result of pulling and stretching.
  • PUPPP (pruritic urticarial papules and plaques of pregnancy) is a mark that can start in or around stretch marks. These are small red bumps that can form large patches. Itching can range from mild to severe.
  • Hyperpigmentation is a darkening of the skin's color. The area surrounding the nipple, the genitals, and the armpits, are the most common areas affected.
  • Sweat and oil production during pregnancy is increased and can promote further skin conditions
Essentially, your skin needs to be extra nurtured, hydrated and protected during pregnancy. If you experience Melasma, Chloasma, itchy skin during pregnancy, or any other discomforts during your pregnancy, we strongly advise you to see your doctor; as there are effective remedies.
