Why Things Taste Different During Pregnancy

What's the Deal with Pregnancy Cravings?

Ever wonder why pregnancy can make a meat-eater hate beef and a vegetarian crave a big, fat juicy steak? Some pregnancy cravings are hormone-related. Just as women crave certain things during their period, the same happens when you're pregnant.

Another theory on food cravings during pregnancy states that pregnant woman's changing tastes are simply the body's way of telling pregnant women what they need. For example, if you're pregnant and your food cravings during pregnancy consist of a tall glass of milk; those cravings during early pregnancy might be your body's way of telling you that you need more calcium.

What we do know for sure is that women's taste-cravings do indeed change during pregnancy and these cravings during early pregnancy may very well impact what she chooses to consume.

Research conducted by Valerie Duffy, PhD., an associate professor in the School of Allied Health at the University of Connecticut showed that women:
  • Have a desire for the sour: Craving more sour foods help women get a more varied diet later in pregnancy so they can acquire the calories they need.
  • Want salt: During pregnancy, a woman's blood volume increases, so this craving may be connected to her greater need for sodium.
  • Like bitter: Some scientists think that craving bitter tastes has to do with evolutionary protection, because many toxic plants and fruits taste bitter. This taste change keeps women from drinking alcohol, during critical phases of fetal development.
