The types of ultrasounds

Types of Ultrasounds

Ultrasounds are performed throughout one's pregnancy--and can be performed for other medical reasons as well.

One type of pregnancy ultrasound is not the same as another. Types of ultrasounds include:
  • Abdominal ultrasound: This type of pregnancy ultrasound is where the ultrasound probe is put on the woman's stomach to look at her uterus and child. This type of pregnancy ultrasound is the most common.
  • Vagina ultrasound: This is when a sterilized ultrasound probe is put inside the woman's vagina. This method is usually used during the first 12 weeks of pregnancy because it allows doctors to look more closely at the woman’s uterus.
  • Doppler ultrasound: A Doppler ultrasound is done the same way an abdominal ultrasound is done, except the Doppler studies the movement of blood flowing through the unborn baby's umbilical cord.
  • Baby's heartbeat: After twelve weeks of pregnancy, doctors can use a portable Doppler to detect changes in blood flow through the baby's heart to produce sounds.
  • 3D and 4D ultrasounds: Most ultrasounds produce your standard 2D images. During the late 90s, 3D ultrasounds came onto the scene. A 3D ultrasound, though not deemed more necessary than traditional ultrasounds, allows you to see parts of the baby more clearly and at any angle.
