Symptoms of Post Partum Depression

Depression after pregnancy is called postpartum depression or peripartum depression. Symptoms of post partum depression include feelings of restlessness or irritability. Overwhelming sadness, feelings of hopelessness and of being overwhelmed by the responsibility of motherhood are also signs of post partum depression. If you seem to be having trouble focusing, remembering important information or appointments, or even making simple daily decisions, you may be suffering from a form of postpartum depression. Sleep patterns tend to be highly irregular with a newborn to care for, so be aware of any changes in your sleep patterns that are may be affecting your mood. A good night’s sleep is not only necessary for the body to rest and renew itself; it is crucial to the body’s internal clock. Hormonal levels are reset during sleep, and an imbalance in these hormones during waking hours may lead to postpartum depression. Sleep affects numerous aspects of a new mother’s psychological well-being. If you find that you are sleeping too much or too little, or having trouble with energy and motivation levels throughout the day, the cause may be sleep deprivation. If even after a conscious effort to get at least 7 to 8 hours of uninterrupted sleep you still don’t feel as energetic, optimistic, or motivated as usual, you may be suffering from postpartum depression.

Warning Signs of Post Partum Depression

Partners, spouses, and family or close friends of a new mother who seems to be overly gloomy or even self destructive for more than two weeks should learn to recognize the signs of post partum depression. Crying often or for long periods of time, overeating or undereating, withdrawal from friends and family, or loss of interest and/or pleasure in normally enjoyable activities are all signs of post partum depression. Frequent headaches, hyperventilation, and chest pains or heart palpitations are also warning signs. Even fear of hurting her new baby or herself and lack of interest in the baby may be signs that a new mother is suffering the debilitating effects symptoms of post partum depression. Help is available, often without the need for medication, so make sure to contact a qualified health care professional if you notice any of these signs of post partum depression.
