SIDS
SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome)
SIDS, also known as Sudden Infant Death Syndrome, is instrumental in causing the premature deaths of thousands of infants across the country every year. While no one knows for sure exactly what causes SIDS, experts speculate that among the root causes may be inadequate or contaminated air supply. Infants between 2 and 4 months of age seem to be especially susceptible to the harmful effects of gases, dust particles, airborne wood shavings, and other air contaminants. It is thus highly important to make sure that your baby is not congested, that his or her air supply is not restricted by blankets or other obstacles, and that the air in your baby’s nursery is fresh and pure
Sudden Infant Death Syndrome Prevention
Although you may want to shower your baby with all sorts of fuzzy, comfortable, plush toys, blankets, and crib accessories, remember that these items may create a dangerous air dam. Make sure to remove any unneeded accessories before putting your infant to sleep. Just a blanket and the soft crib bedding is all your child needs to sleep comfortably. You can even put your child down for a nap in an inclined position (head higher than feet) to encourage the downward flow of exhaled air and a fresh supply of oxygen to the head. Very often parents think of bedtime as a time to escape and have some time for themselves, but remember to check on your sleeping baby often to make sure that nothing is obstructing his or her breathing.
