SIDS Prevention

SIDS Prevention

SIDS prevention tips can help save your baby’s life. The most important thing that you can do is make sure that your child has plenty of access to fresh air. In the interest of promoting air flow, make sure that infants are not confined to the point of being unable to move head and limbs, or protected to the point of being smothered by blankets or pillows.

You may also be preventing sids by introducing air currents into your baby’s room, either by opening a window or running a fan (make sure the air doesn’t blow directly on baby). Keep baby’s room cool, and check on him or her often. Don’t be afraid to wake your baby by coming in and out.

Preventing SIDS – More Tips

Make sure your baby is at least 2 feet off the ground while sleeping, preferably in an inclined position. Sleeping with head raised above the feet makes exhaled air slide down, possibly preventing SIDS by promoting oxygen flow. Fumes are a serious threat to sleeping babies, so make sure that your baby is not exposed to fumes from paint, cleaning solvents, or cars in attached garages. Many SIDS articles especially highlight gas ovens among the cooking or heating devices that can give off toxic fumes that can harm or kill babies. Minimize your baby’s exposure to carbon dioxide and other noxious gases and postpone any home improvements until your child is at least 6 months old. Airborne dust particles from home improvements can build up in the air and make their way into your baby’s lungs.
