Preparing for Pregnancy

While pregnancy planning, it's a wise idea to make an appointment with your doctor to get the necessary pregnancy information you need for a healthy, happy pregnancy. When you visit your doctor to talk pregnancy planning, you should have a complete physical exam as well as a pap smear. In addition, you should talk to your doctor about the following pregnancy information:

  • Information your doctor of your medical history. He or she will want to know if you have had any of the following diseases or conditions:
    • diabetes
    • hyperthyroidism
    • hypothyroidism
    • asthma
    • high blood pressure
    • epilepsy
    • lupus
    • herpes
    • heart disease
    • sickle cell trait or disease
    • urinary tract infections
    • deep vein thrombosis
    • kidney disease
    • arthritis
    • cancer
    • hepatitis.
  • Tell the doctor what kind of prescription drugs, if any, you are currently taking.
  • Information on any past pregnancies or gyno problems will also help your doctor predict potential problems during pregnancy or conception.
  • Do you have any STD's? Certain STD's can affect your baby your ability to get pregnant.
  • What's your family's medical history?
  • Are you currently living a healthy lifestyle? This includes exercise and lifestyle.
