Potty Training

Potty Training

Potty training can begin any time between 18 months and 3 years of age. Signs that your toddler may be ready for potty training include being able to control wetness for at least 2 hours at a time, controlling bowel movements, asking to be changed, feelings of discomfort in a dirty diaper, and being able to follow simple instructions. Other signs may include asking to use the potty chair, asking to wear regular children’s size underwear, and even facial expressions. If your child begins telling you that he or she has a dirty diaper, it may mean that your toddler is ready for potty training.

Baby Potty Training Tips

As with any new skill your child will learn, take it slow, be patient, and give lots of positive reinforcement. Begin potty training with a potty chair and let him or her sit in it for only a few minutes at a time, to get your child used to it. Never insist and, if your child shows resistance, be prepared to try this potty training session at another time. If you think your child may need to urinate or have a bowel movement, ask if he or she wants to use the potty. Then, once the child is seated on the potty, explain what he or she should do. Remember that baby’s potty training sessions should never begin during stressful times, such as moving to a new house, changing jobs, or introducing new animals or people into the household. Don’t punish mistakes, just reward your child’s successes and encourage him or her along the way.
