Choosing Midwife versus Hospital
Is a Certified Nurse Midwife Right for You?
Most of us choose to go to the hospital to have our baby without ever considering having our baby at home with a certified nurse midwife.
But did you know that most studies show that for women who have had a low-risk pregnancy, a planned home birth is as safe as a hospital birth? So what are the pros and cons of hospital births and nurse midwives?
Home BirthPros
- Giving birth in a familiar place
- You can have visitors whenever you like
- You don't have to move once labor pains have started
Cons
- You're a car ride away if there is trouble
- You'll need extra support from nurse midwives, a partner, etc.
- You need to be prepared. Have towels, sheets, etc.
- No epidural in sight
Hospital Birth Pros
- A variety of pain relief is available
- Emergency help is immediate
- You can stay a few extra days to recover
Cons
- You may have more intervention than you want
- Unfamiliar people and environment
- You might find it hard to rest
