Digital Baby Monitors
Baby monitors are beginning to give way to motion detectors and video monitors though they cost a good deal more and are still working out technological bugs. Motion sensors are flat devices which slip under baby's mattress pad and detect her slightest movements. If she becomes perfectly still for 20 seconds, an alarm sounds. These devices, which cost about $100, are useful for parents who are particularly concerned about Sudden Infant Death Syndrome (SIDS). Video monitors run about $200 and haven't earned high marks yet since the technology is evolving. That said, parents accustomed to cellphone cameras and video iPods may consider pictureless sound passe' and small, fuzzy, expensive - but instantaneous - pictures of baby de rigeur.
