Causes of SIDS
Causes of SIDS
Little is known about the causes of SIDS (Sudden Infant Death Syndrome). SIDS causes could possibly include minor infections, smothering, or chest congestion which, alone, seem inadequate causes of death. However, the most consistently important factor in SIDS prevention is access to fresh, clean air. Fans in a baby’s room can circulate the air, as long as they are not placed close enough to the baby to cause a draft. Also consider opening a window slightly and keeping all fumes or chemical vapors from cleaning solvents and automobiles away from your baby’s nursery.
SIDS Prevention
Babies are usually most susceptible to the causes of SIDS during the first 2 to 4 months of life. Prior to two months of age, babies don’t usually sleep for very long and thus are at less of a risk of inhaling any potentially harmful vapors. Although the causes of SIDS still remain a mystery, it seems that after the 4th month or so, babies usually outgrow the danger period for SIDS. Causes of SIDS aside, though, it is always best to closely monitor sleeping babies until at least 6 months of age. Cases of SIDS have been known to happen any time within the first year of life, with the majority occurring within the 2-4 month age period. If your child is congested or has trouble breathing, promptly seek medical attention. Since the exact SIDS causes still remain a mystery, the best SIDS prevention is vigilance and early intervention if warning signs are detected.
