Breastfeeding
Breastfeeding sparks a lot of questions for first-time parents. While a professional lactation consultant can help answer your questions in the hospital, it is always a good idea to have a general understanding of the process before giving birth. The information provided below provides a brief overview.
Breastfeeding 8 to 12 Times a Day
New born babies will nurse up to 12 times a day. The first few days are critical--learning the right positions and feeding habits of your baby will help make breastfeeding an enjoyable, bonding experience between mother and baby. The amount of milk required varies for each baby. Follow your baby's cue, if she is hungry feed her.
You'll know if you are breastfeeding enough if the infant is exhibiting a consistent weight gain. Additionally, you should be changing the baby's diaper at least six times a day which indicates a sufficient amount of nutrients are passing through the body. The baby will let you know when he or she is finished by refusing the breast for longer than 60 seconds.
Encourage your child to take short breaks from drinking. Use this time to burp the baby to avoid colic or similar symptoms. To increase the supply of milk, feed your baby more often. Your body will work to produce more milk if your supply is continuously depleted.
