Breast Feeding vs. Bottle Feeding

Breastfeeding Vs. Bottle Feeding

Breastfeeding is beneficial to both new mothers and their babies. With breastfeeding, there are no bottles to sterilize and no formula to buy, measure and mix. It may be easier for a nursing mother to lose the pounds of pregnancy as well, since breastfeeding consumes extra calories. Lactation also stimulates the uterus to contract back to its original size.

Breastfeeding is also nature's contraceptive—although it still can’t be considered a very reliable one. Breastfeeding on a regular basis suppresses ovulation, making it more likely for a mother who is bottle feeding her baby to menstruate, ovulate, and get pregnant.  Breastfeeding is also an economical alternative to the high cost of bottle feeding with commercially available formulas. Even though a nursing mother may consume more calories and have a larger appetite, the extra food for her is less expensive than constantly paying retail prices for baby formula. Breastfeeding is the best choice for the money, plus it provides unparalleled nutrition and protection from disease for your child.

Breastfeeding and Bottle Feeding Tips

Often a woman may have doubts about the benefits of breastfeeding vs. bottle feeding. It’s possible to switch from breastfeeding to bottle feeding after a few weeks, but it’s very difficult to switch to breastfeeding after bottle feeding is begun. The best advice then is to try breastfeeding first, even if you have your doubts, since you may never be able to go back to it once you opt for bottle feeding.

La Leche League, a national support organization for nursing mothers, has chapters in many cities that meet regularly to discuss breastfeeding problems and offer support. Expectant mothers, breastfeeding or bottle feeding mothers, and their partners are welcome to attend La Leche League meetings free of charge. League leaders offer advice by phone as well. To find a convenient La Leche League chapter, call (1-800) LA-LECHE.
