What kind of birth control options are there?

Birth Control Options and Methods

Choosing between the various available birth control options can be confusing. Some of the newest birth control options may not be proven through years of use, and that may make some women uncomfortable. Just as well, relying on traditional birth control methods such as the barrier method and natural birth control options such as the rhythm method may not be 100% effective. While avoiding pregnancy may be your primary goal, it is also important to consider is the risk of contracting STDs (sexually transmitted diseases. Barrier methods and the rhythm method do not protect against sexually transmitted diseases such as AIDS, chlamydia, herpes and more. The only birth control methods proven to prevent the spread of STDs are abstinence and condoms.

Barrier methods include the diaphragm, cervical cap, and condoms. Designed to block sperm from reaching the uterus, these birth control methods must be used each time you have sex. Only a doctor can fit a woman with a diaphragm or cervical cap. In some cases, using a diaphragm may cause an increased number of urinary tract infections in the women who use them. Condoms provide the most effective protection against STDs. Use of a spermicide does not increase protection against the transmission of sexually transmitted diseases; it only offers increased protection against pregnancy. When choosing a spermicide, avoid those containing nonoxynol-9, which may cause genital irritation and increased risk of catching an STD. While female condoms are not generally as effective as male condoms, they may offer some level of protection if the man refuses to wear a male condom.

Birth control pills are designed to prevent ovulation (or the release of an egg by the ovaries). Most birth control pills contain the hormones estrogen and progestin. Only when taken every day is the pill effective. Some common side effects of the pill include nausea, swollen breasts, water retention, headaches, depression and weight gain. It may also alleviate the symptoms of premenstrual syndrome (PMS), reduce cramping and shorten the number of days of menstrual bleeding. It is also important that women taking the pill not smoke.

There are many birth control methods available, from natural birth control options to the pharmaceutical industry’s newest birth control options, so it is important to choose wisely and carefully. Discuss the pros and cons of each method with your health care provider to be sure you’re making the right decision.
