Audio Baby Monitors
Parents are legendary for their abilities to hear their babies' distress sounds. These abilities are further enhanced by baby monitors which consist of a transmitter placed near the baby and a receiver near the parent. Using a baby monitor allows you to comfortably be much further from your sleeping infant than you could be without it. The original analog monitors work like radios and feature the same problems as radios: static and interference. A family with a baby monitor within range of your home (tuned to the same channel) has an excellent chance of hearing sounds inside your house, and vice-versa. Similarly, if you live near a truck route, expect to hear occasional snatches of CB conversation. These problems go away with a digital monitor. They use a technology which scrambles the signal between transmitter and receiver making your signals impossible to hear elsewhere. An analog baby monitor costs as little as $30 while a digital goes for $60. Spend a little extra and get a second receiver so you can install one receiver near your bed and move a second one around the house with you.
